A Lapbook Is…
"A Lapbook" is a complete collection of booklets and display material from a particular study gathered and displayed in a folder-book that fits in your lap. . A Lapbook is commonly prepared using a file-folder, folded in a “shutter-fold” with a display of bookslets and other information from a study. A Lapbook is displays the highlights of the study. It is used for display of information from a study and as a tool for reviewing material as the child comes back to look at the Lapbook.
The term “Lap Book” was first coined by Tammy Duby, a homeschool mother and writer from Virginia. She named it that because the whole project could fit into a “book” that fits in the child’s lap. A Lapbook is a project book that fits in the child’s lap!
Jamin tells us:
A while back a friend of mine told me that she had tried lapbooking with her son but he didn't like it. I know this little guy and I was surprised he wouldn't like lapbooking. I asked her what he didn't like about it and she said he liked making the booklets but got bored putting them all in the folder and completing the lapbook. My response was "Then let him just make the booklets!" He is 6 and if he gets bored with the complete process let him do the parts he likes. Then Mom can put them in a folder and he will still have a great finished product to show off and be proud of. Keep in mind there is no right or wrong way to do these. Do what works for your child or your family. Let them learn what they can and don't burn them out.
